The circumstances bringing an end to a long marriage can be heartrending. But with time this writer recognized a silver lining behind the cheerless gray cloud of a break-up. In her poem she alludes to her contribution to the friction in the relationship, the hurt that felt undeserved, and the acceptance that opened the way to a new life.
THE GIFT I didn’t deserve his gift, I was too often unkind, my eyes disapproving. I didn’t deserve his gift, I was too often impatient, my words diminishing. I didn’t deserve his gift, I was too often demanding, my expectations unyielding. I didn’t deserve his gift, I was too often proud, my hurt coldly distancing. I didn’t deserve his gift, I was too often accommodating, my resentment seething. I didn’t deserve his gift, I was too often me, my soul-self erupting. I didn’t deserve his gift . . .But I accepted the package reluctantly, Accepted the freedom eagerly, Accepted new choices haltingly, Accepted a fresh life gratefully.
