Trendy or on a budget. If you have a suit, skirt or jacket that is outdated, one tip for updating on a budget is to find a good tailor and have it altered to a more current style. Introducing some trendiness into your look is easy with accessories. Try a new handbag, shoes, or some jewelry. You can always extend the life of your classic pieces by adding some less expensive, trendy pieces you may wear for only a year or so.
Hosiery and undergarments. Sara does advocate wearing hosiery if you want to be at your most authoritative and powerful. Stockings don’t have to be plain Jane; there are more fashion forward choices such as conservative fishnets or tights than ever before. If you choose not to wear hose, your best choice in a shoe would be a close toed, slingback.
Bare legs, and bare arms for that matter, can make you look as though you’re more concerned with your social life than your professional life. It goes without saying that if you choose to go bare legged and wear a sandal style shoe, your legs should be in excellent shape and your feet appropriately pedicured.
Wearing the proper undergarments can help reduce those bulges and sags. Spanx are helpful for smoothing out panty lines and slimming thighs and tummies. Sassybax bras help eliminate bra lines in the back and under the arms.
Color. Generally, charcoal, black and navy are power colors. Adding pinstripes or very subtle pattern is more authoritative than flowery, bold shapes. We used to think red was a power color, but science has found that it can actually send a message that you’re ready for conflict. Blue is the color to wear if you want to inspire trust and loyalty. Bright colors in large shapes can come across as clownish if not skillfully handled.
Sara qualifies all the above by saying that some of these principles depend on the industry. These tips are appropriate for a conservative, traditional work setting. If you’re in a creative field such as marketing or advertising, or in some of the more innovative areas of technology, some of these guidelines can be more flexible.
In any case, whether we like to acknowledge it or not, we humans do make judgments about people based on their appearance and clothes. As we get older and experience more competitive pressure from the younger generation, it becomes more important than ever to make sure our appearance is working for us rather than against us. The added benefit is that taking care of ourselves and our appearance can boost our confidence. If we are confident and take ourselves seriously, others will too!Sara Canaday is a Certified Business Image and Emotional Intelligence Consultant.
